Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) was one of eight children born to a clergyman in the village of Steventon, Hampshire, UK. In 1801 the family moved to Bath, where some of Austen's novels were set.

Her novels are set among the upper echelons of English society during the regency period of English history, and are noted for their social observations, comedy, and insight into the lives of young women growing up among the middle and upper classes and looking for husbands. All of her novels were published anonymously

In 1816 Austen began to suffer from ill health, and moved to Winchester for treatment, where she died the following year, aged only 41.

Jane Austen wrote six completed novels during her lifetime, two of which were published following her death. The complete text of all six can be found on this web site.
